4 More Resolutions for Aging Well

Last month, Secure Aging shared four great health resolutions for aging well. They include getting adequate sleep, staying social, exercising regularly, and making healthy food choices. This month, we share four more resolutions to help you age with grace and good health.

  1. Plan thoughtfully for your next chapter in life. You’ve probably heard most of your adult life about the importance of saving for retirement. This is obviously crucial—but it’s also equally important to give some thought to what exactly you want to do when you are no longer working. Be purposeful with your time so you can devote it to things of value to you, be it volunteering, traveling, visiting or helping family, or pursuing a favorite hobby. As more and more baby boomers reach retirement age, you’ll find resources both in person and online to help plan for the retirement years.
  2. Keep those regular checkups. Going to the doctor’s office isn’t fun, but the more you can keep up with preventive checkups—be it with your primary care doctor, dentist, dermatologist, eye doctor, or other specialist—the more you can avoid chronic health problems. Or, if your doctor/health professional finds something concerning, he or she can treat it before it becomes more serious. Make those appointments and stick to them. If you’re bad about going to appointments, enlist a family member or friend to go with you, and have lunch or coffee afterwards so you feel more obligated to go. Bonus: Regular doctor’s visits can keep you up-to-date with important vaccinations, such as the flu, pneumonia, or shingles vaccinations.
  3. Learn something new. You’ll keep your brain young by constantly learning. From classes to lectures to seminars, we have a wealth of resources to help enrich your mind. Many of those resources are geared toward “snowbirds” and the area’s year-round retired residents. Make it a priority to explore a new hobby, physical activity, or to find out more about a topic of interest. Never stop learning.
  4. Get organized. Take a look around your house. See where you can clean out items you no longer need. They may find a good home with a loved one who would find that item special, or they may get a new life with an organization such as Goodwill or The Salvation Army. There is a lot of advice online and in books nowadays on the best way to organize and declutter, but the best approach is one you will actually use. By organizing the space around you and getting rid of things you no longer need, you’ll feel mentally decluttered as well—more open to new ideas and opportunities.
