Caregiving Services From Secure Aging Highlighted in the Story of Divine Miss M

Secure Aging provides a full range of financial management and caregiving services for seniors in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Perhaps the best way to demonstrate all that we can do is with the story of Divine Miss M.

Divine Miss M may be a nickname for actress/singer Bette Midler, but we’re using the moniker here for a delightful 91-year-old woman. Miss M got in touch with Secure Aging several years back when she was fully active but knew that having someone to support her financial management would come in handy at some point. She had no local family; in fact, all of her family was overseas. Miss M continued to live in the Bradenton area and visit her cottage up north a few months out of the year.

Over time, Miss M noticed that she was occasionally forgetting to pay bills. Although she thought of it as normal memory loss, she also knew it would be good to get Secure Aging involved to help pay her bills on time as a precaution.

Shortly thereafter, Miss M was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. She was still able to visit her cottage up north and play tennis three times a week. However, she decided to sell her cottage, and then she let the folks at Secure Aging know, “I’m ready to move in to senior living.” She sold her condo, and Secure Aging workers helped clear out the things she wouldn’t need anymore.

All was going smoothly until she fell. After going through skilled nursing to recover from her fall, she returned back to her apartment. However, staff from Secure Aging noticed that Miss M left her stove on after cooking—a potential sign that she needed more hands-on care. When Secure Aging staff broached the topic of looking at a new apartment (which was actually in an assisted living residence), the ever-enthusiastic Miss M said, “I want to go today.”

A week later, she moved into assisted living, where she’s enjoying life. She has all of her meals taken care of, and Secure Aging staff take her to doctors’ appointments.  Secure Aging also handles her bills and monitors for fraud. “We’ve become a trusted friend,” says Secure Aging owner Reba Rogers.

This story shows how Secure Aging can

  • handle mails and bill
  • monitor for fraud
  • help organize moves
  • perform bank reconciliation
  • help identify new living situations when appropriate
  • take clients to doctors’ appointments
  • be a trusted friend.
