Does Your Senior Loved One Need Grandkids On-Demand?

It seems like we can get just about anything on demand right now, be it a TV show or movie, or favorite food, or groceries. However, what about grandkids on-demand? Can the joy of caring for a grandchild be provided to a senior who is far away from grandkids or who may not have them?

Turns out, there is indeed a burgeoning business to provide seniors with grandchildren on demand. These two businesses may not provide young children to bring joy to grandparents, but they still provide companionship and practical assistance. Here’s what these businesses are doing to help connect seniors:

  • The startup company Papa provides companionship and help via “grandkids on-demand” for seniors. For the most part, these are younger part-time workers who can help with chores and technology issues or just sit and talk, according to MSN.com. The contractors working with Papa are called “Papa Pals.” “The Pals shared a near-unanimous belief that they were doing good through their work providing companionship on-demand to elderly individuals,” the MSN article reports. Even once the pandemic subsides, many of the workers say they will plan to stay in touch with their senior loved ones. Customers can call 800-348-7951 or download the Papa app for more information. Although Papa is based in Miami, the company operates in more than 20 states and typically charges $20 to $25 an hour.
  • Another startup called Mon Ami—which means my friend in French—also aims to connect seniors with caring members of the community. Mon Ami uses volunteers, and volunteers can choose from several ways to help, including calling a senior in need on a regular basis, running errands, or just providing companionship. Although Mon Ami doesn’t use the “grandkids on-demand” marketing phrase as Papa does, it fulfills a similar need. Seniors can contact Mon Ami to request support or companionship, and volunteers can contact the organization to sign up. Government and nonprofit groups around the U.S. use Mon Ami to provide checks on the elderly without having to increase their staff size. Find out more information on the Mon Ami site here
