Senior Fitness Guide

Getting regular exercise helps your body in so many ways from bones and joints to heart and circulation. Let’s look at some fun ways to exercise and enjoy your surroundings.

Walking

Take a friend and enjoy a stroll in the evenings. The weather won’t be too hot and you might even catch a pretty sunset. There are some beautiful places to walk in Manatee County from the gorgeous beaches on Anna Maria Island to nature views at Robinson Preserve and even the Riverwalk along the Manatee River. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear, bring water and only exercise in your ability range. Do not over exert yourself.

Swimming

Water aerobics is a great way to keep fit while also cooling off in the pool. The water allows less pressure on your joints than typical exercises. Take a look at your local gym or community center for classes. If you have access to a pool, some simple exercises you can do are walking and jogging in shallow to deep water. If you are unable to swim, be sure to use a noodle or a life vest. The Mayo Clinic has a great slideshow of helpful exercises. Take a look at them here.

Biking

Biking can be a great way to get exercise without putting an excessive amount of strain on your joints. A three wheeled bike allows the rider more stability to enjoy the ride. Be sure to know the rule of the road and biker turn signals. If you are planning to go out biking by yourself, be sure to let someone know where you are going in case of emergency.

The weather can be unpredictable and extremely hot in the summertime so be sure to check the news before you go out. The best times for cooler temperatures are early in the morning and late in the evening. Always be sure to bring water when you are exercising because it is very easy to overheat.
