Tips to Become a Better Caregiver

Being a caregiver can be a rewarding yet challenging job. Aging loved ones are so special to us and we only want to provide the best care as they live out their golden years. But if caregivers do not take much-needed breaks, it's easy to become overwhelmed and burned out. Let us offer you some suggestions to make caring for your senior citizen a positive experience.

Attend Support Groups

Taking care of another person can be demanding at times. Talking to others going through the same thing can be really helpful when you discuss your situation, and possibly learn from others’ experiences. The Manatee County Caregiver Forum has a small series of videos that may be helpful to you.

Have Patience

If you have become a full time caregiver, that means the one you are caring for has lost much control over their life. Being helpless is a difficult feeling. As a caregiver, it's up to you to make sure that they understand that you want to help and make their life easier. If your loved one has a memory impairment, they will be asking lots of questions over and over again. Keep in mind that they have no idea that they are being repetitive. Be kind and try to keep a level temperament.

Keep a Routine

Caring for a loved one can be closely related to caring for a child. Develop a daily routine, so they can hopefully know what will happen next. Keep a consistent way to get dressed, bathed and fed. Even if your loved one has a memory impairment, sometimes they will still unconsciously remember small details of a routine day. Once you solidify your routine, daily life with your loved one will become much easier for both of you.

Take Care of Yourself

Taking time for yourself is one of the most important things a caregiver can do. Ask someone else to take your loved one for the afternoon and do something for you. Go out to a park, see a movie, or visit with a friend, whatever makes you feel good. Get enough sleep. Late tireless nights can be extremely draining, so getting in those extra hours can truly make a difference. Other things you can do is write in a journal. Not only is it very therapeutic, but maybe your words can help someone else going through the same thing as you. Taking care of yourself helps you become a better caregiver to others.
