Work Options for Seniors

Do you have an elderly loved one that just loves to have a job and be busy? We have outlined a few work options for seniors that could help your elder with loneliness and social skills.

Work: Doing some light work in a local supermarket can be a great way for seniors to stay social and up to date on everyday life. They would be able to interact with people and keep their skills sharp. Make sure to check out the job thoroughly before sending your loved one to work. Some jobs ask for the employee to lift heavy boxes, so you want to make sure the job fits the abilities of your senior.

A great resource to find jobs for seniors is http://suncoastseniors.com/. Take a look at the jobs they have listed and see if there is a perfect fit for your senior.

Volunteer: If you have a local community group that needs help with fundraisers or events this could be a welcome opportunity for your aging loved one to be part of something rewarding. Depending on your senior’s interests they could work with animals, kids or underprivileged community members. Helping out can make your loved one feel good and give them a sense of purpose.

A great place to volunteer at is Southeastern Guide Dogs, an organization that trains dogs to lead the blind, serve as therapy animals and even work with law enforcement. With dogs in training at their Palmetto campus and two boutiques in the Tampa Bay area, Southeastern is always looking for volunteers to help better their programs. Visit their website here for more information on volunteering.

There are so many volunteer opportunities in our area that we couldn’t name them all here. Please visit www.volunteermatch.org to find the best opportunity for you and your aging loved one.

Enrichment: For those seniors that like to stay active and be involved fun activities the Senior Enrichment Center at Renaissance on 9th could be a great benefit for your elderly loved one. Once you become and member you are able to use the fitness center, attend educational and recreational classes, and meet other seniors in the area.
