Community Spotlight: Dr. Karen Draper of The Hearing Spa

Your hearing is something that you might take for granted until you begin to lose it.

Although some hearing loss is inevitable as we get older, regular care for any sudden hearing changes and hearing loss that affects our ability to enjoy life need a review from a hearing professional. The Hearing Spa is the place to do just that.

We recently chatted with audiologist Dr. Karen Draper to learn more about The Hearing Spa. The Hearing Spa is a family-owned business with two locations in Bradenton and Sarasota. Its hearing professionals work with adults and children for hearing testing, hearing aid fitting and repair, and Cochlear implants. The Hearing Spa has been in the Bradenton/Sarasota area since 1981, and the Moore family has owned the practice since 1999. Dr. Draper practices at The Hearing Spa with audiologist Dr. Vicky Moore and licensed hearing aid specialist Noel C. Moore, a father/daughter team.

Dr. Draper shared a few tips to help you preserve your hearing:

1. Get a hearing test by age 60. This provides audiologists with a baseline in case hearing loss occurs. After that, Dr. Draper likes to see patients every two years or once a year if there are hearing loss problems.

2. See a doctor immediately if you suddenly lose your hearing.  Hearing loss from aging will happen gradually, but a sudden hearing problem is a warning sign. Other red flags that warrant an appointment include dizziness and ringing in the ears. Ringing in the ears could indicate a common hearing problem called tinnitus.

3. Get your hearing checked if any hearing loss interferes with your daily enjoyment of life.“Hearing loss can be very isolating,” Dr. Draper says. Just like a muscle, the functions we use to hear need to be actively used or they stop working properly. This is why hearing loss that disrupts your daily routine should get checked sooner rather than later. There is an array of hearing aids available nowadays to help patients, and many of them are can be worn discreetly.

4. Wear headphones a lot? Then keep the volume at a level to where you can still hear noises around you.

5. Be vigilant of other hearing loss causes. Beyond hearing loss due to noise exposure (we’re talking to you, motorcycle lovers and concertgoers), hearing loss can be tied to genetics, chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, and even the use of some medications. Stay aware of potential causes of hearing loss so you can get your hearing checked when needed.
