Secure Aging Staff Spotlight: Office Manager Kathy Zionkowski

When you call Secure Aging, the friendly, reassuring voice you hear on the line is Kathy Zionkowski, our office manager.

Kathy, a native of Philadelphia, has been part of the Secure Aging team for more than seven years. She helps to keep everything (and everyone) running smoothly by answering phones, going through clients’ mail, and helping to organize clients’ accounts using the accounting software QuickBooks.

Kathy’s interest in working with older adults began at the age of 15, when she worked in the kitchen of a nursing home. “I always thought elderly people were so cool. It’s easy to get them smiling,” she says.  Kathy also spent over 9 years in the banking industry and 9 years serving as an Executive Assistant to a COO for Metz’s Enterprises.  All of these experiences have contributed to Kathy’s amazing approach to clients…no task is too big for Kathy to tackle.

Kathy enjoys helping people who call and who may be initially upset about their problems. She can help walk them through steps to manage their problems so they don’t seem so difficult anymore. That skill has become even more important since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

“People call and they are crying,” Kathy says, referring to the isolation that has left many senior clients cut off from face-to-face contact with many others. “They want to know when we are going to see them. I let them know that we are all going through this together.” It will be an adjustment for isolated seniors to return to regular socializing once the pandemic is over, Kathy says.

A key service that Kathy performs for Secure Aging is a review of clients’ mail so clients aren’t duped by junk mail and money solicitations. Seniors are often overwhelmed by the volume of mail they receive and unsure what is an actual bill and what is not.  Through her review of clients’ mail, Kathy has learned about the many demands that seniors have for their money. Kathy will comb through the mail to identify actual bills that need to be paid, or for bills that clients overpaid, etc.  Updating banking information, health care insurance, VA information, etc, are all routine for Kathy in the services she provides to Secure Aging clients.

Next time you have a question for Secure Aging, don’t hesitate to give the office a call and let Kathy help you out.
